Stress is a complex reaction to a perceived threat or prolonged resistance to unpleasant, undesired circumstances. Stress is highly personal -- what is stressful for one person may be exhilarating to another.
Feeling stressed initiates a cascade of biochemical responses in the body that heighten anxiety, make the heart pound, increase sweating and blood pressure, tightens muscles, and generally makes us feel on edge. This is bad for the organs and immune system when endured for a prolonged period.
When we're stressed we tend not to think clearly, and use poor judgment in making choices and decisions. We can be more sensitive to others' criticisms, have less resilience, and be more quick to argue and fight.
Mental Tips for De-Stressing
Repeat a mantra like -- there's lots of time / it's all good
Compliment yourself -- I'm really good at this, even if it's hard
Practice distraction with something heart-warming
Reserve judgment -- ask questions instead
Counter the negative with the positive -- this sucks BUT I'm healthier for it
